KIT — Kunst im Tunnel
KIT — Kunst im Tunnel lies nestled between two road traffic tunnels below the Rheinuferpromenade, a popular riverside promenade in Düsseldorf. Since it opened in 2007, this spectacular space has developed into a hub for contemporary art.

KIT is situated near the Ministry for Family Affairs and the former state chancellery on Horionplatz. After the Rheinuferpromenade development project was completed in 1995, the space was used as an event venue on a trial basis. The art scene keenly promoted its use as a permanent venue, but the building was not considered safe enough.

Eventually, in 2006 — the year of the first Düsseldorf Quadriennale — the architecture firm Fritschi Stahl Baum, which had already drawn up the plans for the Rheinuferpromenade, was commissioned to design a concept for an exhibition space.

The visible entrance to KIT — a glass pavilion on the promenade facing out towards the river Rhine — is one of the most scenic spots to enjoy a bite to eat along the Rhine and houses the KIT Bar. When the sun is out, its terrace offers an ideal spot to relax and unwind with a marvellous view over the Rhine loop. Visitors can walk through the café and take either the stairs or a lift down to the 888 m2 submarine-shaped exhibition space.

Each year, Artistic Director Gertrud Peters puts on four to six temporary exhibitions. The programme focuses on contemporary art and the fields of sculpture, painting, photography, video and installation art. KIT also aims to develop and promote exchange between young artists from around the world.
