Underground – How the Tunnel Became a Venue for Art

The construction of the Rheinufer Tunnel was one Düsseldorf’s largest projects to reduce traffic and improve the quality of life. During the construction of the tunnel, an ancillary space with access to the promenade was created on the Mannesmannufer. Exhibitions, concerts, and theater productions took place here even before the construction was completed. Two decades later, this space has become an extraordinary exhibition venue for contemporary art.
