Dialogue and Photography is an exhibition and workshop project at the intersection of artistic practice, visual education and social participation. The focus is on children and young people from refugee families, who develop their own visual worlds through a dialogue-based process. Under the guidance of the artists Berit Schneidereit, Franciis Frings, Jessica Tille and Thomas Koester, the participants explored a wide range of photographic techniques in the workshops – from pinhole cameras and cyanotype to darkroom processes and digital imaging. This resulted in multi-layered works that bring individual perspectives to light whilst also opening up spaces for collective experience.
The exhibition at KIT brings together the creative processes and outcomes of the workshops, allowing visitors to experience the potential of photographic practice as an artistic and dialogical medium.
Selected works from the workshops have been printed on T-shirts, which were worn by the participants in a joint presentation at the opening and are available for purchase during the exhibition at KIT. The proceeds from the sale will go towards the IJS e.V. children’s home.
The project is being developed in cooperation with IJS e.V., the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, KIT and the Cultural Office. ‘Dialogue and Photography’ was initiated by a donation from the artist Ursula Schulz-Dornburg and is being conceived and organised by the Cultural Office’s Photography Coordination Unit.
