As part of the 2014 Quadriennale, one of four urban gardening beds in Düsseldorf was created on the lawn in front of KIT. In cooperation with the Stiftung Schloss und Park Benrath and with support from the Prinzessinnengärten in Berlin, a collection of raised beds were created at various locations in Düsseldorf, which were planted with local flora over a period of several years.
In addition to the typical Rhine cabbage and protein-rich beans, the small urban kitchen garden in front of KIT mainly specialized in lettuces and local herbs with a focus on tea herbs such as fennel, mint, lemon balm, aniseed hyssop, and sage as well as edible flowers.
From seeds to fully grown plants, people were able to follow the different growth stages of the vegetable varieties and ultimately take part in the harvest themselves. Urban gardening at KIT offered wide-ranging insights into local crops in the Rhineland.
The project included artistic, social, and communicative aspects and sensitized people to issues related to nutrition, food production, and the environment.
